Open Letter Urges Daniel Bwala to Clarify Remarks on Cardinal Onaiyekan

Open Letter Urges Daniel Bwala to Clarify Remarks on Cardinal Onaiyekan

I am writing to urge Daniel Bwala, the President’s Special Adviser on Media and Policy Communication, to reflect on his public statements and the responsibility that comes with speaking for Nigeria. The Constitution makes clear that sovereignty belongs to the Nigerian people, while public officials serve as custodians of the state. I believe Bwala’s March 2026 interview with Mehdi Hasan raised concerns about consistency, humility and Nigeria’s image abroad. I also take issue with his remark suggesting that Cardinal John Onaiyekan was “rooting for Obi” after the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of Nigeria visited President Bola Tinubu. The Catholic Church has a long record of speaking on justice, poverty, insecurity and national welfare without acting as a political party. I urge Bwala to clarify or retract the remark, engage faith leaders with greater historical understanding, and ensure that public communication is truthful, respectful and centred on the realities facing Nigerians.
