Trump Seeks Congress Approval to Remove Syria from Terror Sponsors List

Trump Seeks Congress Approval to Remove Syria from Terror Sponsors List

US President Donald Trump has notified Congress of his plan to remove Syria from the US State Sponsors of Terrorism list. This starts a mandatory 45-day review period. If lawmakers do not object, Syria’s designation—held since 1979—will end. The move follows an executive order last year that lifted most sanctions on Syria while keeping targeted measures against President Assad, human rights abusers and terror-linked networks. The White House says delisting will help Syrians rebuild their economy and maintain pressure on violent actors. If Congress allows the change, Syria will no longer be classified as a State Sponsor of Terrorism for the first time in over 46 years. This represents one of the most significant shifts in US policy toward Damascus in decades.

Trump's plan skips any recent shift in Syrian policies since 1979, yet it moves forward with no new evidence shared.

I'm not convinced a 45-day silence means consent; Congress could easily raise objections after the deadline lapses.

Lawmakers should review Syria's current conduct and require regular updates during the 45-day review to guide a final decision.
