South Africa Rejects US Pressure to Scrap Black Empowerment Policies
South Africa says it will not abandon its Broad-Based Black Economic Empowerment policies despite pressure from the United States and warnings that its trade access under the African Growth and Opportunity Act could be affected. Minister in the Presidency Khumbudzo Ntshavheni said removing the policies would preserve the economic inequalities created by apartheid. She said South Africa would continue to pursue economic transformation and land reform under its own laws. The dispute has intensified after US Ambassador Leo Brent Bozell III publicly criticised President Cyril Ramaphosa and called for changes to B-BBEE rules, land reform, farm-security policy and other domestic issues. South Africa’s foreign ministry summoned the ambassador, accusing him of undiplomatic conduct and insisting that the country’s sovereignty must be respected.
