Why the Nigerian Army Must Be More Resolute in Combating Bandits
If a US Army general were kidnapped, the US military would deploy every available resource to rescue him, dead or alive. A documentary once showed a rescue mission in Taliban territory cost dozens of soldiers and two helicopters, yet they pressed on even when the pilot’s fate was unknown. A strong military response deters would-be attackers. In Nigeria, however, bandits often overrun bases and turn them into camps. Instead of retaking lost positions, our forces sometimes withdraw, and kidnapped soldiers have been executed on camera while no major operation follows. Now that high-ranking officers are being targeted, there’s concern the army will still not react decisively. Without a clear, robust response, every base and every officer remains at risk.
