Joint Security Operation Kills Alleged ISWAP Commander in Ondo Forest
A joint operation involving the Nigerian Army, the Department of State Services and Amotekun personnel has killed Abdussamad Ohida, an alleged senior commander of the Islamic State West Africa Province, in Owo forest, Ondo State. Security sources said Ohida, also known as Anwar, was killed alongside other fighters during a raid on a suspected terrorist hideout. Intelligence reports said the operation disrupted planned attacks in southern states ahead of the festive period and the 2027 general elections. Ohida was alleged to have taken over parts of ISWAP's Central Nigeria network after the 2023 arrest of Abu Ikrimah. Authorities linked him to attacks in Ondo, Abuja, Niger and Kogi states, including the 2022 Kuje Correctional Centre attack. Security officials said his death could weaken the group's efforts to expand into southern Nigeria.
