Ejiofor Urges Tinubu to Apologise to Asaba Over 1967 Massacre
Human rights lawyer Ifeanyi Ejiofor has urged President Bola Tinubu to issue a public apology to the people of Asaba, Delta State, over the October 1967 massacre during the Nigerian Civil War. He said an official acknowledgement by a sitting President is necessary for healing, forgiveness and national reconciliation. Ejiofor noted that the Asagba of Asaba has also maintained that the community seeks an apology from the current Nigerian government. Historical accounts say hundreds of civilians, including men and boys, were killed after Federal troops entered Asaba on October 7, 1967. Ejiofor argued that recognising the victims and the community's enduring trauma would honour their memory and strengthen national unity. He said the demand is not for revenge, but for truth, dignity and a meaningful confrontation with a painful part of Nigeria's history.
