Anambra Finance Dispute: What Obiano Said He Inherited From Peter Obi
Anambra’s finances are again under debate after Peter Obi rejected claims that his administration left debts for later governments. Obi said he left no debt and saved more than ₦75 billion for the state. The Anambra government, however, released records alleging that eight external loans taken between 2007 and 2013 totalled $123.7 million. It said the outstanding balance is now $92.35 million. In 2015, Willie Obiano’s administration said it inherited ₦9 billion in cash, ₦25.6 billion in investments and liabilities valued at ₦185 billion. Its officials explained that the figure included obligations linked to ongoing road projects, rather than only debts payable immediately. The disagreement centres on how cash, investments, project commitments and external loans should be counted when assessing the financial position Obi handed over to Obiano.
