Tinubu Calls Atiku’s Fuel Subsidy Restoration Promise ‘Serious Ignorance’
President Bola Tinubu has criticised former Vice President Atiku Abubakar over his pledge to restore petrol subsidy if elected in 2027. Tinubu said bringing back the subsidy would show a lack of understanding of governance and the economy. Speaking while receiving Osun State Governor Ademola Adeleke at the Presidential Villa, Tinubu argued that subsidy removal has improved public finances for states and local governments. He said many states previously struggled to pay workers and pensioners without federal bailouts. According to the Minister of Finance and Coordinating Minister of the Economy, subsidy removal added ₦15.8 trillion to the federation account between June 2023 and December 2025. Of that sum, ₦10.4 trillion was shared by states and local governments, while the Federal Government received ₦5.4 trillion. Tinubu said the funds have helped governments meet salary obligations and invest in roads, schools, hospitals and other public services.
