Lagos Cracks Down on Fake Flood Photos, Warns Against Misinformation

The Lagos State Government has accused bloggers and influencers of circulating images of floods from other states and countries as if they occurred in Lagos. Commissioner for Environment and Water Resources Tokunbo Wahab described this as a deliberate attempt to politicise flooding and erode public confidence in government response. Wahab warned that sharing misleading visuals distracts from real victims and hampers urgent intervention. He singled out a user who posted a flood photo from Accra as a Lagos incident, calling the act disingenuous and urging everyone to verify before sharing. While affirming respect for freedom of expression, the commissioner stressed that rights must be exercised responsibly and within legal limits. He appealed for civil discourse and accurate reporting to ensure effective disaster management and sustainable solutions for all Lagos residents.

Do you think penalising bloggers will actually curb fake flood images or just push misinformation underground?

Do you worry that punishing bloggers might simply shift misleading flood photos into harder-to-monitor outlets?

Interesting that the Lagos government mentions foreign images, but they didn't show any examples to back their claims.

I'm not convinced cracking down will stop fake news, it might just scare away genuine citizen reporting.

Before posting flood images online, verify location tags and timestamps to avoid spreading misleading content and potential panic.
