Nigeria’s Kidnapping Economy: Following the Money Behind the Crime
Kidnapping remains one of Nigeria’s most painful security crises. While families focus on saving their loved ones, organised criminal networks may see abductions as a source of income through ransom payments and other demands. The people holding victims may be only the visible part of a wider network. Facilitators can include people who provide information, transport, communication, safe locations or help to conceal proceeds. Arresting a gunman is important, but it may not dismantle the people financing and sustaining the operation. Security agencies need to investigate the full financial trail behind kidnappings. This includes identifying ransom collectors, intelligence providers, suppliers and anyone helping to move or hide criminal proceeds. Claims against individuals must, however, be supported by credible evidence. Nigeria can better weaken kidnapping networks by combining stronger intelligence, financial tracking, quicker investigations and successful prosecutions. The question should not only be who carried out an abduction, but also who funded it, enabled it and benefited from the ransom.
