Lagos Assembly Backs State Police, Seeks Clearer Powers for States
The Lagos State House of Assembly has endorsed the proposed creation of state police, but wants the constitutional amendment to give states clearer control over their security agencies. During plenary on Tuesday, Speaker Mudashiru Obasa said the bill must clearly define how state and federal police authorities will share responsibilities. He warned that retaining too much control at the federal level could weaken the purpose of state policing. Obasa also called for provisions on parliamentary police, arguing that legislatures need dedicated security to protect their independence from executive interference. He directed the Clerk of the House to forward the Assembly’s resolution to the National Assembly.
