Who Pays for the Private Jets Used by Nigeria’s Political Elite?
Private jets remain a familiar sight around Nigeria’s political elite despite the country’s economic pressures. Governors, ministers, lawmakers and party leaders may own aircraft, charter them, or use planes belonging to government institutions, companies and wealthy individuals. Chartering a private jet can cost thousands of dollars per flight hour. As political activity builds towards the 2027 elections, the cost of repeated trips across the country raises serious questions about who funds them. Using a private jet is not, by itself, evidence of wrongdoing. But where public officials, government-owned aircraft or public funds are involved, Nigerians deserve clear records showing who authorised the travel, what it cost and the public purpose it served. Aircraft registrations, company records, procurement documents, charter agreements and campaign-finance disclosures can help establish who owns these jets and who pays their bills.
