New Orleans Jail Worker Jailed for Role in Escape of 10 Inmates
A former jail worker in New Orleans, Sterling Williams, has been sentenced to two and a half years in prison over the May 2025 escape of 10 inmates from the Orleans Justice Centre. Investigators said Williams shut off water to a cell, allowing the inmates to remove a toilet, crawl through an opening in the wall and scale a fence. The escapees left a note behind mocking the security breach. Williams pleaded guilty to malfeasance in office. His lawyer said he did not knowingly aid the escape but failed to follow procedure. All 10 inmates have since been recaptured, while former Sheriff Susan Hutson and others face separate charges connected to alleged management failures and assistance given to the fugitives.
