Buhari Offered to Back Osinbajo’s 2023 Presidential Bid Four Times, Akande Says

Laolu Akande, a former spokesperson to ex-Vice-President Yemi Osinbajo, has denied Babachir Lawal’s claim that former President Muhammadu Buhari considered Osinbajo’s 2023 presidential ambition immoral or distasteful. Akande said Buhari personally offered to support Osinbajo’s ambition on at least four occasions, asking: “If I don’t support you, who will I support?” He added that Buhari publicly praised Osinbajo’s issues-based campaign during a Federal Executive Council meeting ahead of the APC primary. Osinbajo finished third at the APC presidential primary in June 2022 with 235 votes. Bola Tinubu won the primary with 1,271 votes, while Rotimi Amaechi came second with 316 votes.
