Akwa Ibom Community Pleads with Gov Eno to Halt Illegal Sand Mining Before Disaster
Residents of Mbiokporo Obio in Nsit Ibom LGA are gripped by fear as illegal sand mining by Engr. Nsikakabasi Udo Idiaha has carved a massive gully dangerously close to their homes. Cracks have begun to appear on nearby buildings, and villagers worry the approaching rainy season could trigger a collapse. The suspect allegedly bought the land under the pretext of building a hotel but instead deployed heavy excavators and dredges, leaving behind a deep borrow pit. Two people have already died in incidents linked to the operation. Youth President Akparawa Okon John Enoh says the operator boasts of being “highly connected” and ignores all community protests. Without the funds to mount a legal challenge, villagers are appealing directly to Governor Umo Eno and the Ministry of Environment to step in before further tragedy strikes.
