Trump Says US Can Secure Strait of Hormuz ‘Alone’
A day after urging allies to help reopen the war-hit Strait of Hormuz, US President Donald Trump declared that Washington needs no assistance. “We don’t need anybody. We’re the strongest nation in the world,” he said, repeating his criticism of NATO members for hesitating to join the coalition. Key partners including Germany, Spain and Italy refused to send ships. German Chancellor Friedrich Merz cited a lack of UN, EU or NATO mandate and said Germany was not consulted before the conflict began. Meanwhile, Iran has effectively shut the narrow waterway with drones and mines. Tehran’s new Supreme Leader, Mojtaba Khamenei, insisted the strait remain closed. Iran warned crude oil prices could spike to $200 per barrel. Trump has threatened to deploy the US Navy to escort commercial vessels, but most allies have declined his request.
