EFCC Recoveries: Where Does Nigeria’s Recovered Money Go?
Whenever the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission announces a major recovery, Nigerians ask a simple question: where does the money go? The answer is not always the Federal Government’s account. Between October 2023 and July 2026, the EFCC said it recovered about ₦1.23 trillion, alongside hundreds of millions of dollars and other foreign currencies. Of the naira amount, about ₦397.26 billion was recovered for the Federal Government, while ₦836.34 billion belonged to MDAs, state revenue services, companies, individuals and foreign victims. Some recovered funds are returned to victims as restitution. The commission said it released ₦661.32 billion and $492.37 million to beneficiaries within the period. Other proceeds may be assigned to public programmes, including the ₦50 billion allocations to NELFUND and the Nigerian Consumer Credit Corporation in 2024. Recovered assets, including properties and vehicles, may be sold after final forfeiture or converted to public use. Nigerians still need clearer records showing what was recovered, who received it, the legal basis for each release and how forfeited assets were eventually used.
