Egyptian TV Presenter Sarah Khalifa, 11 Others Sentenced to Death in Drug Case
An Egyptian court has sentenced television presenter and producer Sarah Khalifa and 11 others to death over a major drug manufacturing and trafficking case. The Cairo Criminal Court found the defendants guilty of forming an organised group that allegedly imported materials for synthetic drugs, produced the substances and distributed them. They were also convicted of possessing unlicensed firearms and ammunition. The case involved 28 defendants. Nine received life sentences, while seven were acquitted. Authorities said investigators recovered more than 750 kilogrammes of narcotics and materials allegedly used to produce them. The death sentences followed the mandatory referral of 13 cases to Egypt’s Grand Mufti for an advisory opinion. The verdict is among the country’s most closely watched drug trials because of Khalifa’s public profile.
