Former Lagos Teacher Sentenced to Life Imprisonment for Assaulting Eight-Year-Old Pupil

A Lagos State High Court in Ikeja has sentenced former teacher Nwatu Isaac to life imprisonment for sexually assaulting an eight-year-old pupil at a nursery and primary school in Epe. Justice Rahman Oshodi found that the prosecution proved the case beyond reasonable doubt. The court relied on the child’s consistent testimony, her immediate report to her family, medical evidence and testimony placing the defendant at the school when the offence occurred. The judge said Isaac abused the trust placed in him as the child’s former teacher and committed the offence on school premises, where children should be safe. The court ordered that his name be entered in the Lagos State Sex Offenders Register. The prosecution was also directed to take steps under the Victim Assistance and Witness Protection Law following allegations that the child and her mother faced intimidation from school staff. The court made no finding on those allegations.
