Could Public Executions Be the Answer to Nigeria’s Banditry?
Banditry and kidnapping have become some of Nigeria’s most serious security threats. These crimes fuel fear, disrupt our economy, and leave countless families traumatised. I believe that public executions of those convicted for kidnapping could serve as a powerful deterrent. Strong, certain punishment might make would-be criminals think twice. However, any death penalty must follow a fair trial, with due process to prevent wrongful convictions and abuses of power. True security will require more than harsh penalties. We need stronger law enforcement, better intelligence gathering, tighter border controls, efficient prosecutions, and targeted socioeconomic development. Only a balanced approach—grounded in justice and respect for rights—can restore confidence and end this multibillion-naira criminal industry.
