Constitution Amendment Bill Sent to States as National Assembly Seeks Responses Within 30 Days
The National Assembly has sent the 2026 Constitution alteration bill to the Houses of Assembly in all 36 states for consideration. State legislatures are expected to communicate their resolutions within 30 days, but the Clerk to the National Assembly said this is an administrative target, not a constitutional deadline. For the amendment process to advance, at least 24 state Houses of Assembly must approve the bill. The National Assembly said the states retain full independence over how they consider and vote on the proposals. The process follows the bill’s passage by the Senate and House of Representatives. Lawmakers say they intend to complete the constitutional review before the 10th National Assembly ends in June 2027.
