Samuel Akinsanya: From Nationalist Activist to Odemo of Isara
Born in Isara in 1898, Samuel Akinsanya moved from clerical work into trade unionism and nationalist politics. He helped establish the Lagos Youth Movement, which later became the Nigerian Youth Movement, and served as its general secretary and vice-president. He also led the Nigerian Produce Traders Union and opposed a foreign buying cartel that threatened cocoa producers in 1937. Akinsanya’s political career faced a major turning point in 1941. After party members chose him as their candidate for a Legislative Council by-election, the Nigerian Youth Movement’s executive backed Ernest Ikoli instead. Akinsanya ran independently, lost the election, and left the party amid a public dispute that played out in the press. That same year, he became Odemo of Isara, a traditional title he held until his death in 1985. He later co-founded the Action Group and served in the Western House of Chiefs and the Western Region government.
