Tens of Thousands Protest Spain’s Response to Ceuta Migrant Crisis

Tens of thousands of people protested in Madrid, Ceuta and other Spanish cities over the government’s response to a major migrant influx into the North African enclave of Ceuta. The crisis began in late July when about 72,000 migrants crossed from neighbouring Morocco. At least 90 people reportedly died, while several thousand migrants remain in temporary shelters and other difficult conditions. Protesters demanded tighter border controls and criticised Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez’s government. Spain’s opposition parties, including the People’s Party and Vox, have also called for tougher immigration policies. The government denies abandoning Ceuta and says it has pledged €309 million in support. It is also seeking European assistance to help manage and process migrants in the enclave.
