Abaribe, Oshiomhole and Akpoti-Uduaghan Lead Nominees for 2026 National Legislative Awards

Senators Enyinnaya Abaribe, Adams Oshiomhole and Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan head the final shortlist for the 2026 National Legislative Awards. The event takes place on July 9 at the NAF Conference Centre in Abuja under the theme “Celebrating Distinguished Leadership, Parliamentary Excellence and Public Service.” Nominees were selected through public online voting and consultations with the National Assembly Press Corps, the Nigerian Conference of Speakers, the Parliamentary Staff Association of Nigeria (PASAN) and the National Assembly Legislative Aides Forum (NASLAF). A rigorous process highlighted outstanding contributions to legislative development and democratic governance. Category winners include Enyinnaya Abaribe and Chike Okafor for the South-East, Adams Oshiomhole and Inombek Awaji-Abiante for the South-South, and Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan and Jonathan Gaza for the North-Central. Special awards will also honour long-serving members, top parliamentary staff and leading legislative aides. Former Senate President Ameh Ebute will chair the ceremony, with Senate President Godswill Akpabio, Speaker Tajudeen Abbas and former Senate President Bukola Saraki as special guests of honour.

It's curious that award organizers focus on three senatorial heavyweights, but grassroots representatives often get overlooked in such ceremonies.

I'm not convinced that celebrating senators on one night fully reflects their long-term legislative contributions or impact on constituents.

A good approach might be to review each nominee's voting records and sponsored bills before July 9 to guide more meaningful discussions.
