At Least 10 Die After Inhaling Petrol Fumes at Rivers Jetty
At least 10 people reportedly died after inhaling petroleum fumes at Okari Jetty in Okrika Local Government Area of Rivers State. The victims were said to be scooping fuel that had spilled onto the water when they were overwhelmed by the fumes. The Civilian JTF commander in Okrika, Igwe Godswill, said many of the victims were young people seeking a livelihood. He appealed for job opportunities and stronger intervention to stop youths from taking such dangerous risks. Rivers Police said the victims were allegedly attempting to steal crude oil. The command said it had begun an investigation to confirm the number of deaths and establish the circumstances surrounding the incident.
