Police Deploy Air Support, Tactical Teams to Rescue Abducted Niger Worshippers
The Niger State Police Command says it has deployed tactical teams, military personnel, DSS operatives and air support to rescue Muslim worshippers abducted by suspected terrorists in Borgu and Agwara LGAs. The attackers reportedly surrounded mosques in Dekara, Kpenya, Sabon-Gida and Gidan-Zana shortly after Friday prayers on August 21, taking an unconfirmed number of people. Police are working with residents to establish the number of victims. The command says the difficult terrain, vast size of Borgu and suspected criminal hideouts around Kainji Lake National Park have complicated the operation. The Inspector-General of Police has directed additional deployments, while security agencies say their priority is to rescue the victims alive. Police also confirmed the killing of the Magajin Gari of Agwara and said investigations and clearance operations are underway.
