Anambra Court Jails Church Music Minister 25 Years for Raping 16-Year-Old During ‘Deliverance’
The Anambra State High Court convicted James-Mary Onuorah of raping a 16-year-old during a “deliverance” session at his home in Awada. Justice Chudi Nwankwo sentenced him to 25 years for rape and an additional 7 years for offensive conduct under the Violence Against Persons (Prohibition and Protection) Law, 2017. Onuorah, a choir director and church teacher, deceived the victim’s mother by claiming her daughters were possessed by spirits. He lured the teenager to his altar, ordered her to strip naked, and insisted sexual intercourse was a “cure” for her alleged spiritual affliction. The court based its verdict on evidence that included the girl’s pregnancy and her April 2026 delivery, as confirmed by hospital records. It rejected the defendant’s confessional statement for procedural flaws and awarded the victim ₦5 million in compensation.
