Australian Teacher Charged Over Alleged Abuse of Male Student at School and Camp
An Australian teacher, Deandra Kontou, has been charged with nine child-abuse-related offences over allegations involving a male student. The alleged incidents reportedly occurred on school grounds and during an overnight field trip. Court conditions reportedly bar her from teaching children, entering school grounds or contacting the alleged victim and witnesses. She was granted bail and is expected to return to court. I find it troubling that she was reportedly placed on approved leave after concerns were raised and later obtained another teaching role. I suspect there may have been failures in reference checks, reporting procedures or oversight at her former workplace. Authorities have also ordered a review of how she was hired by the later school.
