How Nigeria Can Tackle Voter Apathy and Protect INEC Ahead of 2027
Nigeria’s 2027 general elections will test public confidence in democracy. Reducing voter apathy will require credible elections, stronger civic education and an electoral commission that is properly funded and able to act independently. Campaign finance also deserves closer attention. Clear spending rules and transparent sources of political funding can help limit the influence of wealth, create a fairer contest and give younger candidates a better chance to participate. The low turnout recorded in the 2023 general elections showed the scale of voter disengagement. Many young Nigerians remain frustrated by economic hardship, distrust in the system and the belief that their votes may not lead to meaningful change. INEC, political parties, the media and civil society should intensify voter education, especially for first-time voters. Candidates must also present practical policies and be held accountable for their promises if participation is to translate into better governance.
