Marseille Bans Daytime Protests After Nationwide Cost-of-Living Unrest
Authorities in Marseille have banned public gatherings and demonstrations between 12pm and 8pm on Monday after a weekend of unrest, looting and clashes linked to cost-of-living protests across France. France’s interior minister is expected to visit the city as officials review the security response. The municipal government has criticised police handling of Saturday’s demonstrations. Prime Minister Sébastien Lecornu said more than 1,200 people were arrested nationwide and at least 150 law-enforcement officers were injured. The protests were driven by anger over inflation, rising energy costs and falling purchasing power, before some gatherings turned violent.
