Norway Mourns as King Harald V Dies at 89 After 35-Year Reign — 1 of 3
1 / 3

King Harald V of Norway has died at the age of 89 after reigning for 35 years. He became king in January 1991 following the death of his father, King Olav V. Known as “the People’s King,” Harald was widely regarded as a modest and unifying figure. His marriage to Queen Sonja, a commoner, was seen as a major step in modernising the Norwegian monarchy. He also represented Norway in sailing at three Olympic Games before becoming king. He is survived by Queen Sonja, Princess Märtha Louise and Crown Prince Haakon, who is expected to succeed him as King Haakon VIII. Norway now begins a new chapter after the loss of a monarch remembered for duty, tolerance and national unity.
