Lagos Court Sentences Man to Death for Murder After Sachet Water Dispute

A Lagos State High Court in Ikeja has sentenced Adakole Ogbodo to death for the murder of a man identified as Bolaji after a dispute over sachet water. The court heard that the men had been eating together on Mosley Road, Ikoyi, on January 31, 2022, before an argument turned violent. A witness said Ogbodo attacked Bolaji with a scaffolding pipe, pursued him across the road and was later found near his body. Police also recovered a knife from Ogbodo. Justice Modupe Nicol-Clay held that the circumstantial evidence against Ogbodo was compelling, despite the absence of an eyewitness to the death and an autopsy report. The judge ruled that the mandatory penalty for murder under Lagos State law applied.
