US Supreme Court to Hear Nigerian Man’s Asylum Case Over Forced Cooking for Armed Group
The US Supreme Court will review whether a Nigerian man who says he was forced to cook for the Unknown Gunmen can be denied asylum for providing “material support” to terrorism. Izuchukwu Ozurumba said he accepted a cooking job at a remote camp outside Lagos in 2022 before discovering it was run by the armed group. His lawyers say he was held there for six months, prevented from leaving and escaped while buying supplies. An immigration judge ruled that cooking meals supported the group’s activities and denied his asylum request. However, a US appeals court later found that he was a captive labourer who gave no meaningful voluntary support. Ozurumba was deported to Nigeria in 2025 while his appeal was still pending. The Supreme Court is expected to hear the case and give its decision by June 2027.
