Scottish Independence Debate: Should Nigeria Hold a Referendum on Unity?

I came across reports that leaders of major nationalist parties in Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland have reaffirmed their peoples’ right to decide whether to remain in the United Kingdom. The parties argue that no government in Westminster should prevent their nations from choosing their political future. This raises a question for Nigeria. Why are Nigerians still expected to treat “One Nigeria” as the only option when many people believe the present structure has failed to deliver fairness, inclusion and development? I believe Nigeria’s centralised system, built on a military-era constitution, has deepened marginalisation and prevented genuine progress. In my view, another election alone will not solve these structural problems, regardless of who wins in 2027. Nigerians should demand a national referendum and a sovereign national conference to negotiate a decentralised federation or, if necessary, an orderly dissolution of the country.
