Umuoba Anam Youths Demand Probe Into Alleged Army Shooting and Arrests
The Umuoba Anam Youth Council has called for an urgent and independent investigation into allegations that soldiers deployed for peacekeeping shot and arrested unarmed residents in the community. The council alleged that several people sustained gunshot injuries after troops fired live rounds while attempting to disperse youths. It also said some residents were arrested, despite claims that they did not confront the soldiers. While commending the Federal and Anambra State governments for deploying security personnel to the disputed area, the council urged authorities to clarify the circumstances of the incident. It called for any personnel found to have breached rules of engagement to be identified and sanctioned. The group said the community remains committed to a peaceful resolution of the crisis and does not want further casualties from an operation meant to restore peace.
