Reps Query NRC Over Abuja-Kaduna Rail Cost and Derailment Concerns
The House of Representatives Committee on Public Petitions has questioned the Nigerian Railway Corporation over safety concerns and the reported cost of the 186-kilometre Abuja-Kaduna rail corridor. A petition by the Citizens Whistleblowers Coalition alleged that the project cost about ₦1.7 billion per kilometre and called for a value-for-money audit. The NRC Managing Director, Dr Kayode Opeifa, said project procurement was handled by the Federal Ministry of Transportation and the Federal Executive Council, not the corporation. The committee directed the petitioners to include the ministry as a co-respondent. It also asked the NRC to submit a written response on derailments and other safety concerns. The hearing was adjourned to November 12, 2026, when the ministry is expected to appear.
