NSCDC Chief Visits Minna as Probe Continues Into Deaths of 37 Miners in Custody

The Commandant General of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps visited Minna, Niger State, for the seventh-day Fidau prayers held for 37 suspected illegal miners who died in the Corps’ custody. He met with the Emir of Minna, relatives of those who died and families of survivors. He expressed condolences and said no officer found responsible for the deaths would be protected from investigation or prosecution. The Federal Government has set up an investigative committee to examine the incident. The NSCDC says it is cooperating with the panel, while relevant personnel have been placed in protective custody. The Corps has also ordered its flags to fly at half-mast for three days as it awaits autopsy results.
