Foundation Demands Mining Safety Reforms After Fatal Incidents in Kogi, Taraba and Niger

The Media for Social Change Foundation has called for urgent reforms in Nigeria’s mining sector following deadly pit collapses in Kogi and Taraba states and the deaths of 37 suspected illegal miners in NSCDC custody in Niger State. The group said the cases show a wider failure to protect miners and other vulnerable people. It urged authorities to investigate the arrests, detention and deaths in Niger State transparently, publish the findings and hold anyone responsible for negligence or abuse accountable. It also called for a review of mining regulations and enforcement operations, as well as safe reporting channels for miners and host communities to report hazardous sites and unsafe enforcement practices without fear of reprisals.
