Peter Obi Denies Leaving Anambra With $123.77m Debt, Calls for Free Campaigns

Peter Obi has denied claims that he left Anambra State with $123.77 million in debt. The former governor said the facilities linked to his administration were largely World Bank and IFAD development programmes negotiated through the Federal Government, not commercial loans he personally secured. Obi said Anambra’s external debt records stood at about $18 million when he assumed office in 2006, about $30 million when he left in March 2014, and roughly $45.15 million by December 2014. He asked the state government to explain how the full $123.77 million could be attributed to his tenure. He also said he has no disagreement with Governor Chukwuma Soludo and will not seek to become governor again. Obi urged state governors to allow candidates from all parties to campaign freely, arguing that voters should decide their leaders.
