Gumi: Clerics Should Join Politics Instead of Only Praying for Leaders

Islamic scholar Sheikh Ahmad Gumi has said clerics should be free to participate actively in politics rather than only pray for those in office. His comments come amid renewed debate over religious leaders seeking elective positions, including former communications minister Isa Ali Ibrahim Pantami, reported as the PDP governorship candidate in Gombe, and Sokoto-based scholar Sheikh Bashir Ahmad Sani. Critics say partisan politics could expose clerics to insults, division and reputational damage, weakening their moral authority. Supporters argue that scholars with integrity and competence should help shape government from within. Gumi said a scholar who enters politics and endures its challenges is better than one who remains on a prayer mat praying for politicians.
