MRA, IPC Urge Stronger FOI Compliance to Tackle Disinformation
The Media Rights Agenda and the International Press Centre have called for stronger transparency and access to credible public information as Nigeria marks the 2026 International Day for Universal Access to Information. At a Lagos forum themed around freedom of information in the age of disinformation, speakers said public institutions must respond properly to legitimate information requests and make reliable records available to citizens. Legal practitioners and media advocates noted that compliance with the Freedom of Information Act remains weak more than 15 years after it became law. They urged government institutions at all levels to improve record-keeping, submit required compliance reports and respect citizens’ right to information. The forum also stressed that journalists need stronger training in fact-checking and in using FOI requests to obtain verified information for routine reporting.
