Xenophobic Attacks in South Africa Claim Lives of Mozambican Nationals and Foreign Traders
Over the weekend in Mossel Bay, violent protests targeting foreign nationals turned deadly. A government statement confirmed five Mozambican citizens were killed in the attacks, while two others died in a road accident during attempts to return home. Authorities say around 800 Mozambicans were caught in the unrest. Some 300 chose to repatriate themselves on Saturday, and the remaining 500 are now sheltered in a safe location in the Western Cape as arrangements for their return proceed. South African police are investigating the deaths of two men at an informal settlement, though their nationalities have not been released. In separate incidents, a Pakistani vegetable supplier was fatally attacked in Vereeniging, and a Bangladeshi shop owner was shot dead during an armed robbery in KwaZulu-Natal.
