Kano NDC Rift: Old Guard Reclaims Tickets from Kwankwaso Camp

A sharp dispute has broken out in the Kano chapter of the Nigeria Democratic Congress over a 60–40 formula for party and elective positions. Old members accuse Senator Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso’s recent entrants of ignoring the agreed split when selecting candidates. In response, the party stripped five House of Representatives tickets and seven state assembly slots from Kwankwasiyya nominees. A document signed by the state chairman confirmed the reallocation of seats across key constituencies. Each faction insists it has been short-changed. While the NDC old guard vows to secure more slots, Kwankwasiyya leaders say the process was fair and inclusive. Meanwhile, the national executive committee has announced measures to enforce accountability and prevent future disputes. A political analyst warns that the Kano crisis could weaken the NDC’s prospects for the next presidential contest if not resolved quickly.

How will this Kano NDC rift over the 60–40 candidate formula affect the party's unity ahead of the next elections?

I appreciate your point—do you think this ticket reshuffle risks alienating key supporters at the grassroots?

It's interesting that old members reclaimed tickets so quickly, despite Kwankwaso's camp promising fresh unity and participation.

Insisting on that 60–40 split seems like entrenched elites blocking new voices in Kano politics, not protecting party principles.

Perhaps both sides should form a joint committee to review candidate selection guidelines and ensure clear enforcement of the 60–40 formula.
