NANS Orders South African Businesses to Quit Nigeria in Four Days
The National Association of Nigerian Students has given South African companies operating in Nigeria a four-day deadline to leave the country. The student body cited ongoing attacks and intimidation of Nigerians and other Africans in South Africa. It warned that if the ultimatum lapses, its 43 million members would begin picketing affected businesses. NANS pointed to Nigeria’s support for South Africa during apartheid and condemned recent xenophobic violence that saw Nigerians injured and property destroyed. It called on the Nigerian government and the African Union to take stronger action. Meanwhile, the Foreign Affairs Ministry has evacuated hundreds of Nigerians from South Africa after a June 30 deadline earlier set by xenophobic mobs.
