Insecurity in APC Strongholds Could Reshape Future Election Turnout
I believe the worsening insecurity in several northern states could have serious political consequences for the APC. Bandit attacks, kidnappings and displacement have forced many residents from communities in Zamfara, Sokoto, Kebbi, Kaduna, Katsina and Niger states. Reports and videos of people fleeing their homes have raised fears about access to communities and major roads. In some areas, residents reportedly face restrictions on movement and demands for illegal levies. With many people displaced or unaccounted for, I question whether the party can still rely on the same level of voter turnout in areas that were once key strongholds. Security failures may weaken the influence of religious and party loyalties during future elections. A similar situation in any party's core support base, including the South-East and South-South, could also significantly affect its electoral numbers.
