Senate Blocks Probe of N1.3bn PFIPC Budget, Defers to Tinubu’s ICPC Inquiry

Nigeria risks losing its moral compass when public institutions and leaders show little empathy. Greed and corruption seem to drive too many decisions. On Wednesday, the Senate declined to launch its own investigation into the N1.3 billion allocation for the Presidential Foreign Intervention Promotion Council (PFIPC). Senators said President Tinubu’s directive for the ICPC to probe the matter should take priority. Senator Suleiman Kawu had moved to examine how PFIPC was inserted in the 2026 budget and which officials approved the sum of N1,302,978,784. He urged committees on Ethics and Appropriations to look into possible fraud and unauthorized spending. Deputy Senate President Barau Jibrin ruled out debate on the motion. He reminded colleagues that an executive investigation is already underway and advised senators to await the ICPC’s findings.

What factors do you think influenced the Senate to defer the N1.3bn PFIPC investigation to the ICPC, instead of acting independently?

I'm with you on that—seems they'd rather pass the hot potato than dig in themselves.

It's telling that public institutions repeatedly shift accountability rather than address possible corruption in these budget allocations.

Civil society groups should track the ICPC inquiry timeline closely and demand regular updates on progress and findings.
