Niger Imposes 24-Hour Curfew on Minna After Protests Over 37 Miners’ Deaths Turn Violent

The Niger State Government has imposed a 24-hour curfew on Minna after protests over the deaths of 37 suspected illegal miners in NSCDC custody turned violent. Governor Umaru Bago said the restriction took effect after Friday prayers. He said state transport buses and private businesses were vandalised as authorities moved to restore calm in the capital. The state government, DSS, police and NSCDC have set up separate investigations into the deaths. A civil society group has called for autopsies and a public release of the findings, raising concerns over reports that dozens of suspects were held in an overcrowded facility.
