Osun 2026: Police Deploy 15,000 Officers, Bar Amotekun and Vigilantes From Election Duty

The Nigeria Police Force says it will deploy 15,000 officers for the August 15 Osun governorship election and will enforce a zero-tolerance approach to electoral violence and vote buying. Residents have been urged to vote peacefully and report suspicious activity to security agencies. Police said Amotekun, vigilante groups, the Joint Civilian Task Force, hunters’ associations and other non-state outfits will not take part in election security. Only authorised agencies, including the Police, Army, DSS and NSCDC, may secure polling units, escort election materials or operate checkpoints. Yiaga Africa reportedly identified 13 local government areas as potential violence hotspots, with Osogbo and Irewole listed as critical-risk areas. The security plan includes officers at more than 3,000 polling units, specialised security teams and EFCC operatives monitoring alleged vote buying.
