David Hundeyin Calls Sani Abacha Nigeria’s Most Misunderstood Leader
Journalist David Hundeyin has argued that former military Head of State Sani Abacha is Nigeria’s most misunderstood leader, saying the regime’s human-rights abuses have overshadowed its economic and strategic policies. In a recent interview, Hundeyin said Abacha was the closest Nigeria had come to an ambitious nationalist with enough time in office to pursue his vision. He claimed the administration reduced inflation from about 75% to single digits in under two years and supported nuclear research. Hundeyin acknowledged that his childhood experience may have been shaped by growing up in a wealthy family. He said any assessment of Abacha’s rule should consider both its record of repression and corruption and its claimed economic achievements.
