US Awards $125,000 Grant to Preserve Enugu’s Lejja Iron-Smelling Heritage Site
The United States government has awarded a $125,000 grant to support the conservation, digital documentation and physical preservation of the historic Lejja iron-smelting site in Nsukka Local Government Area of Enugu State. The grant will be implemented by the Centre for Memories through its Nchekwaba Project. It is expected to preserve the site’s physical remains and expand public understanding of Lejja’s ancient iron-production history. Enugu Deputy Governor Ifeanyi Ossai said the state is preparing an executive bill to create a legal framework for protecting and administering the archaeological site. He added that the Lejja community, heritage institutions and government must work together to sustain the project. Lejja is regarded as an important archaeological site in southeastern Nigeria, with evidence of ancient iron smelting that has drawn scholarly interest.
